Jordan Benedict Jr. (Rock Hudson), the owner of the largest cattle ranch and vast lands in the state of Texas, inherits his family's legacy from the previous generation. He travels to the other end of the country to buy an award-winning horse and falls in love with Leslie (Elizabeth Taylor), the headstrong and intellectual daughter of the ranch owner. They get married and arrive at the magnificent Benedict Mansion in the midst of the vast prairie. The management of the mansion is in the hands of Jordan's sister, Luz Benedict, who is not willing to hand over the control to the new bride. Moreover, Luz has taken Jett Rink (James Dean), a rebellious and independent spirit who grew up with Jordan on the ranch and refuses to get along with him, under her protection. The story begins in the 1920s and unfolds within the framework of the relationships between these four characters. It spans until the 1950s, witnessing the upheaval of traditional lives with the emergence of Texas's first oil giants, the wounds caused by American racism, the passions and loves in the lives of a respected family of landowners from two generations, and the birth of the third generation who will lead completely different lives. The film features a memorable meeting scene between Jordan and Leslie after their first long separation due to an argument, which is etched in the memory of Hollywood and movie lovers. This magnificent film, based on a novel adaptation, was selected for preservation in 2005 among the films that need to be protected.
